The Opener: Mize, Cameron, Braves - MLB Trade Rumors

So Skubal lost his debut (though a quality start), Peralta and Mize were hammered… May’s debut is tonight. Brewers fans feeling apprehensive given recent history? One day after George Lombard Jr. hit the ground running with the Yankees, fellow infield prospect Angel Genao did the same with the Guardians. Genao began his big-league career with four consecutive hits. He started at third base for the injured Jose Ramirez. Right-hander Casey Mize was one of the bigger arms moved at the trade deadline. San Diego acquired him from Detroit right before the bell sounded at 5 pm on Monday. Mize’s first outing with his new club didn’t go as planned. He was crushed for eight earned runs over 3 1/3 innings against the Diamondbacks. Mize had given up a total of seven earned runs in his final five starts with the Tigers. “Pretty tough time to have the worst start of my career,” Mize told reporters, including Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. “Kind of just put us in a really tough spot and didn’t give us a chance to win.” Royals left-hander Noah Cameron is on some kind of run. He cruised through eight innings against the Twins on Wednesday, striking out nine. Cameron gave up a run on two hits. After Royce Lewis reached on a bunt single with nobody out in the fourth inning, Cameron didn’t allow another baserunner. The lefty has now gone at least seven innings in three straight starts. He’s permitted a total of five hits in that stretch. Only four pitchers since 1900 have had a three-game run going seven innings with two or fewer hits allowed in each start (h/t Sarah Langs of MLB.com). The last one was Justin Verlander during his Cy Young campaign in 2019. Atlanta won again on Wednesday behind seven strong innings from Bryce Elder. The Braves are winners of seven straight and 14 of 19 in the second half. The victory over the Marlins, along with a loss by the Dodgers, pushed Atlanta into position for a first-round bye in the postseason. The club is now one game ahead of Los Angeles in the loss column. The Dodgers were swept by the Cubs and have dropped six in a row. There’s still plenty of baseball to be played before October, and it should be a tight race for the two byes in the NL.
